Assassin’s Creed Shadows Lets You Stick with One Protagonist for Most of the Game; Exploration Loop Is Sherlock-Like

Assassin's Creed Shadows will be the first new entry since 2020's Valhalla. In that game, players had to choose at the start whether to play with a female or male main character (Eivor Varinsdottir), but in the new installment, there will be two separate protagonists: the shinobi Naoe and the samurai Yasuke.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Map is “Smaller Than Valhalla,” Developer Reiterates

Assassin’s Creed Shadows associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois has reiterated that the game’s rendition of Japan will be comparable in size to Egypt from Assassin’s Creed Origins. Speaking with VGC in an interview, Lemay-Comtois referred to the size of the two games’ settings as “roughly similar”. This, of course, also means that Japan in Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be smaller than the world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. This reiterates a similar statement made by the developer previously.

As promised, Ubisoft debuted a lengthy gameplay video for Assassin's Creed Shadows at its summer showcase. As you'd expect, the developer appears to have nailed things from a environmental perspective, with the game boasting an impressively attractive portrayal of Japan. What's more, it seems to be a cut above previous Assassin's Creed titles in terms of graphics, which is probably down to it being current-gen exclusive.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' 'Smaller' Open World Map Is Still a Healthy Chunk of Japan | Push Square

It's been said for a while now that Assassin's Creed Shadows will have a smaller open world map than its immediate 'RPG' predecessors, Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Word on the street is that it'll be more comparable to the map from Assassin's Creed Origins, which was still big, but perhaps wasn't quite as overwhelming as the worlds that would follow.

Here's Your First Real Look at Assassin's Creed Shadows Gameplay | Push Square

Ahead of Ubisoft's showcase (which is scheduled for tomorrow at the time of writing), we've been handed our first real look at Assassin's Creed Shadows. While it's not uncut, it is gameplay footage, and gives us a quick look at the title's open world, stealth, and combat. As expected, fights differ greatly between protagonists. Naoe is agile and uses tricky weapons, while Yasuke is a hulking warrior who wields more traditional armaments.

Say what you will about Ubisoft, it knows how to dish out decent post-release support. There’s only so many articles we can write here at Push Square, so we’ll gloss over some additional news to make our point: For Honor, now over eight years old, is still getting meaningful content updates on PS4. That gives you some kind of indication of just how strongly the French firm supports its games.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Returns to an AC-Origins-Sized Map, Only Part of Japan is Covered

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the next big RPG in the series from the team at Ubisoft Quebec, and the rule for recent RPG-style entries in the series has been “bigger is better.” Assassin’s Creed Origins was big, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was bigger, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was perhaps even a bit larger. So, does Ubisoft plan to push the scope even further for AC Shadows? Thankfully for those who found some recent AC games a bit overwhelming, the answer is no.
